Edna P. Lyons

Edna P. (Mahoney) Lyons, 97, of Stoughton died Sunday June 7, 2015. She was the wife of the late Edwin R. Lyons, Sr. Born in Stoughton in 1917, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Keleher) Mahoney. She attended Stoughton Public Schools for grades 1 - 4, St. Mary's School for grades 5 - 8 and finished grades 9 - 12 at Stoughton High School. Upon graduation from Stoughton High School in 1935, she worked in the offices of the Shawmut Woolen Mills on Canton Street. They sent her to Boston for a course that allowed her to work with some of the earliest IBM equipment.
After marrying Edwin R. (Buddy) Lyons in 1942 she would devote her life to raising their five children after their first child Edwin R. Lyons, Jr. was born on December 31, 1944.
It was also in 1944 that the only brother she ever knew, Daniel Mahoney, was killed in action during World War II. She accepted it at the time as her family's share of the price we paid as a nation to defeat enemies who had brought the war to our shores. Twenty five years later, she could not reconcile the idea of paying that price again with one of her sons to an ambiguous enemy known as Communism that was halfway around the world in Vietnam, and thus she became an advocate for peace and never wavered from that for the rest of her life. She was an active member of the Stoughton chapter of Another Mother for Peace and worked in the 1972 presidential campaign in support of George McGovern. Advocating peace was an activity that was always shared with her sister Leona Benoit and usually took the form of writing letters to newspaper editors, congressmen, senators and presidents. Her most recent telephone call to the White House was a month ago.
Except for brief stays in Randolph and Brockton, she was a lifelong resident of Stoughton and a communicant of Immaculate Conception parish where she was a member of the choir in her youth and a catechism teacher at a later period in her life.
She was often the person who answered the telephone at Lyons Fire Equipment, a company founded by her husband in 1962. Both she and her husband were later able to enjoy 14 winters in Boynton Beach, Florida during their retirement years. An activity she enjoyed in those years was assembling photo albums to record family history.
She is survived by four children, David J. Lyons of Las Vegas, NV., Dennis J. Lyons of Westminster, MA., Kathleen T. Metcalf of Tiverton, RI., Raymond E. Lyons of Rockland, MA and by eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 2001, her first son Edwin in 2009 and by two sisters Grace Robinson and Alice Cobb.
For the last several years of her life she had become legally blind. Audio books available from the Perkins School for the Blind became a great source of enjoyment to her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Perkins Trust 175 North Beacon Street, Watertown, MA. 02472.
Funeral will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
