Doretha (Graves) Smith, 85, died Sunday, July 31, at the St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton after a period of failing health. Born and raised in Maxton, NC, she was a graduate of Maxton Schools. She also earned her Bachelor's Degree from North Carolina State University and her Master's Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in New York City. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Mrs. Smith worked as a Case Worker in the Child Welfare Division for the State of New York for many years, retiring over 30 years ago. She has been a resident of Stoughton for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Stoughton for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed working on sudoku puzzles, playing Scrabble and Backgammon, completing the New York Times Crossword Puzzle and working on her flower garden.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorea Smith and her nephew, Ekwan Steele both of Stoughton. Mrs. Smith was the beloved grandmother of Dalane' Smith and Diana Smith. She was the sister of Macky B. Smith and Alton Smith both of NY and the late Bobby Smith and MarthaAnn Steele. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, August 6, at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 5-8 PM. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
