Denis Lambert, a freelance trombonist died Wednesday evening, June 1, 2011. He was 52.
He has performed as trombonist with the Boston Pops, in numerous productions with opera companies, symphony orchestras, choral groups, liturgical societies, and Broadway shows throughout the greater Boston region. He has toured with comedian Don Rickles among an assortment of other star attraction artists.
Mr. Lambert, whose mother sang with the Metropolitan Opera, developed a love of music at an early age. He was recruited to attend the BU School of Fine Arts by his long-time friend and mentor Boston Symphony Orchestra member Roger Voison. While at BU he studied with BSO principal trombonist Ron Barron. Ron reminisces about Denis as "a dedicated and enthusiastic musician always ready to perform and learn about new music. He was a happy and effervescent performer which he demonstrated in his wide variety of musical interests." Denis won many kudos for his performances and beautiful sound playing alto trombone, tenor trombone, bass trombone and euphonium. Lambert founded the acclaimed Commonwealth Brass Quintet. They were often heard playing at numerous ceremonial occasions throughout the region including the Mayor of Boston's Inaugurations. The Commonwealth Brass is the brass quintet in residence at St. Paul's Church in Dedham. Colleagues said he was a great story teller, an enthusiastic musician with a passion for making great music.
An active Freemason, Lambert served multiple terms as Master of Lafayette Lodge No. 100 in Connecticut. Recently, Lambert served the Craft with the Rabboni Lodge in Westwood and The Massachusetts Lodge in Boston. He was also active as a Shriner, a member of the 76ers Club of Boston and a member of the Boston Musicians Association Local 9-535. While in High School Denis was an Eagle Scout in Troop 57, E. Hartford, CT, first chair of the All-Eastern Band and a member of McDonalds All-American Band. Mr. Lambert was a resident of Stoughton since 1999, previously living in Roslindale for several years.
Mr. Lambert was also trained as a professional chef and wine expert. He was known for his ability to create notable meals combined with just the right wine. He would entertain his friends with his vast knowledge of wine, food, music, and opera. According to his friend John Mahoney "Denis had a real flair for entertaining his friends new and old". In his free time, he also enjoyed playing golf and reading.
Of late Denis was fortunate to find the love of his life Marilyn Mullen who he married in September, 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mullen-Lambert, his mother, Elizabeth Lambert both of Stoughton and sister Muriel Rowland of VT. He is also survived by his English Bulldog "Maggie"
