David Joseph “Spanky” Sousa, 57, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 27, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle as he was working on Route 24. He was the loving husband of Maria H. (Resendes) Sousa for 33 years. He was born in Stoughton, the son of Antonio M. Sousa of Hull and the late Fernanda M. (Raposo) Sousa. He was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1985. Spanky worked for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for 14 years and was the District 5 foreman in Bridgewater. He previously was a truck driver at Boston University for many years.
Spanky loved his hometown of Stoughton and helping people in need. He was a former Selectman for the Town of Stoughton and was also the Chairman for a time. He played Santa for many charities in the area at Christmas time. He was a founder of the Parade of Lights holiday parade in Stoughton. He loved riding his motorcycle, meeting new friends, and the character Fred Flintstone, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife and father, Spanky is survived by his beloved children, Harley Sophia Sousa and AJ Joseph Sousa, both of Stoughton. He was the brother of Dennis J. Sousa and his wife Michelle of Reading and Danny J. Sousa and his girlfriend, Haynes Altobello of Weymouth. He was the uncle of Delaney Sousa, Naomi Sousa, and Dennis Sousa Jr. He was the son-in-law of Maria F. Resendes of Stoughton and the late João V. Resendes.
The funeral will be held at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27) Stoughton, on Friday, August 2, at 9:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton, at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours will be on Thursday from 3-7 PM. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Spanky‘s memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 (https://www.dana-farber.org/).
