David G. Handy, a lifelong resident of Stoughton and former Stoughton Postmaster, died Friday, September 23, 2011 at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing Home in Stoughton after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Mary (Reilly) Handy. Born in Stoughton, he was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1943. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army, where he was awarded two Purple Heart Medals. After his military service, Mr. Handy returned to Stoughton and began working at the Stoughton Post Office, where he worked for many years. He retired as Postmaster in 1982. He was an art lover and attended Quincy Art School and also studied under local painter Charles Vermoski. He was also a talented woodworker and boat builder. He was a member of the VFW Post 1645, the American Legion Post 89 and the Disabled American Veterans, all in Stoughton and the Retired Postmasters Association.
He was the father of the late Edward F. Handy and the brother of Helen L. Cruff of WA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton on Monday at 10:30AM. Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton prior to the mass from 9-10 AM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
