Daniel E. Hughes

Daniel E. Hughes, PhD, 85, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at the Goddard Center in Stoughton after a long period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Mary Lois (Cheverie) Hughes. Born in Boston, he was raised in Boston and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army. Dr. Hughes attended Boston College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree and Masters Degree. He also attended the University of Illinois where he earned his Doctorate in Education. Dr. Hughes was a longtime resident of Stoughton. Dr. Hughes worked as the Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Wareham for 2 years before retiring in 1984. Prior to that, he worked as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Stoughton for five years. He also worked as a Professor at Eastern Illinois University for 4 years while studying for his Doctorate Degree. He was a longtime teacher in Stoughton prior to moving to Administration. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling and reading.
He is survived by his children; Daniel J. Hughes and his wife Maureen of Stoughton, Paul M. Hughes and his wife Sharon of MI, Anne E. Smith and her husband Ernest of Norfolk, Anthony T. Hughes and Jane M. Hughes both of Brockton, John W. Hughes of TX and Richard G. Hughes and his wife Louise of FL. He was the brother of David Hughes of Amesbury and the late Edward Hughes, William Hughes, Alice D'Loreal and Margaret Hughes. He was the grandfather of Michael D. Hughes and Zoe E. Hughes. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Monday, June 20 at 11 AM. Visiting Hours Sunday from 2-5 PM. Burial will take place at VA National Cemetery, Bourne on Monday at 1:15 PM. Donations in his memory may be made to the Beacon Hospice of Fall River, 529 Main St., Suite 101, Charlestown, MA 02129.
