Betty A. (Christie) (Purcell) McEwan, 82, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at her home under the care of Old Colony Hospice, after a short illness. She was the wife of 38 years of William T. McEwan. Born in Boston, she was raised in Dorchester and was a graduate of Dorchester Girls High School. She was a resident of Stoughton for over 60 years. Mrs. McEwan worked as a cashier for Christy's Markets in Stoughton and Brockton for over 30 years, retiring at age 65. Known for her sense of humor, in her free time she enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and reading.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Robert Purcell of CT, Linda Basis of Randolph, Maureen Manning of Brockton, John Purcell of E. Bridgewater and James Purcell of Stoughton. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Maureen Basis and her brother James Christie. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Prayers will be offered in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday, May 13 at 10 AM. Visiting Hours will be held Monday from 4-7 PM. Interment will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
