Barbara A. (Daly) Canavan, age 102, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2023 at her residence in Stoughton, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles E. Canavan. Born in Stoughton, she was the daughter of the late Annie (Sheehan) and Thomas J. Daly. She was a lifelong resident of Stoughton and a graduate of Stoughton High School. She received a Bachelor’s degree in 1942 from Bridgewater State College. Barbara was a voracious reader who loved libraries and learning and sharing ideas. She served as a trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Stoughton Public Library for 40 years. Barbara also worked for the Town of Stoughton in various offices before retiring as the Town Assessor. Upon her retirement, she traveled extensively both in United States and overseas. Barbara had a gift for friendship. She had lasting relationships with many friends that she made in her school days, and she continued to make new friends at each stage of her very long life. Even in the last weeks before her death, Barbara continued to enjoy visits from friends she made late in life whom she loved and who loved her. Her family is grateful for their kindness. Barbara’s mind was clear right up to the very end, but she did accumulate physical infirmities over time. She was able to remain in her home until she passed away because of the care that she received from the wonderful women from Best of Care. Her family is also grateful for their kindness.
Barbara is survived by her children, Kathleen E. Berry of Holbrook, Charles E. Canavan and his wife Florence Canavan of Bridgewater, Thomas J. Canavan of Stoughton, Maryjane Canavan and her wife Anne Paradis of Sunderland, William R. Canavan of Los Angeles, California, and Kenneth G. Canavan of Abington. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amy Higgins and Karen Kean. Barbara was also the mother of the late Richard J. Canavan.
