Avelino “Al” De Aguiar, 94, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maria Juvelina (Gonsalves) Aguiar for 64 years. Son of the late John and Beatriz (Rodrigues) Aguiar, he was born and raised in Camara de Lobes, Madeira, Portugal. He came to Stoughton in 1949. Al was a barber at Hanscomb Air Force Base in Bedford before opening his own barber shop, Al’s Barber Shop in Stoughton where he worked for 40 years until he retired at age 62. He was a member of the Portuguese National Club in Stoughton. He enjoyed fishing, playing card games and gardening but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Al was the father of Beatriz C. Libby, Lisa M. Johnston and her husband Tad and Tracy J. Gerome and her husband Craig all of Stoughton and the late Maria Luiza Aguiar and Clarisse M. LaFrance and her late husband Steven. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Keith LaFrance, Ashley Smith, William Libby, Pat Libby, Angela Johnston, Edward “Teddy” Johnston, Carter Gerome and Nolan Gerome and his great-grandchildren, Aliyah Poire and Cassius VanFleet. He was the brother of Zeta Moura of Canada, Antonio Aguiar of Florida, Joseph Aguiar of Brockton and the late Celeste, John Aguiar, Beatriz Moura and Augustine “Gus” Aguiar. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, December 11 from 10-11:30 AM followed by Funeral Prayers at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al‘s memory may be made to Old Colony Elder Services, 144 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301 (https://ocesma.org/).
