Augusta Marie Kessel, aged 88, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2012 at the Sharon Epoch Care Center. The courage with which she dealt with her illness, her spirit, and concern for others, was an inspiration to many. She passed with love in her heart and a voice raised in song.
Augusta, nicknamed Jimi, was born on November 19,1923 in Dumont, New Jersey, the daughter of Anthony and Ellen Hemmel. Jimi was predeceased by her brother William White; and sisters Antoinette Badalati, and Charlotte Hemmel.
Jimi, a 1942 graduate of the St. Vincent School of Nursing in New York City, met her husband, McKeen Cattell Kessel, a World War II Marine, while he was convalescing at St. Vincent's Hospital.
A renowned award winning artist, Jimi's paintings grace the walls of many American homes and institutions. Jimi taught water color privately and in community schools and was a past member of the Copley Art Society.
Jimi enjoyed her many pets, painting, playing the guitar, long walks on Sandy Neck Beach, the beautiful sunsets on Lake Massapoag and her many friends and family. Her family remember her as a loving, kind and thoughtful mother who spoiled them with her culinary talents.
A long term resident of Sharon, MA, Jimi was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, the Sharon Audubon Society and the Sharon Senior Care Resident Council.
Jimi is survived by her husband, McKeen Kessel; daughters , Sharon Luoma of Sharon, MA and Lynnellen and her husband Fred Johnson of Weare, NH; sons, Ket Kessel and friend Kim of Braintree, MA, and McKeen Kessel and his wife Marie of Falmouth, MA., ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Jimi's family is especially appreciative of the love and support provided by Epoch Care of Sharon, MA.
A Mass and celebration of Jimi's Life will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Cottage St. Sharon on Saturday, November 17th at 10:00 AM followed by a burial in Rock Ridge Cemetery, Sharon. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visitation has been omitted. Arrangements by the Farley Funeral Home, Stoughton.
