Attilio F. "Sonny" Proia, 84, died Friday, April 5, 2024, at his home in Mattapoisett with his loving wife by his side, after a long illness. He was the husband of Alice B. (Porcaro) Bachant Proia and the late Jean (Pietroski) Proia. Born and raised in Newton, he was a graduate of Our Lady Help of Christians High School and also studied at Bryant College. Sonny was a proud Veteran of the US Army. Following his Honorable Discharge, he returned home and began working for Star Market. His career at Star spanned over 40 years and he was responsible for the opening and managing of several stores throughout his career. He retired several years ago. Sonny was a resident of Mattapoisett for the past 8 years, previously living and raising his family in Canton for many years. In his free time, Sonny enjoyed mowing the lawn, gardening, and watching his favorite sports teams Syracuse University and the Giants. He could also be found listening to music while riding his stationary bike.
In addition to his wife Alice, he is survived by his two sons, Michael Proia of Foxboro and Mark Proia of CA. He was the stepfather of William P. Bachant of Lakeville, Alisa McCabe of NJ and Paul Bachant of Italy. Sonny was the brother of Lillian Ferranti of Maynard, Ethel O’Connor of Foxboro and the late Edith Maguire of Maynard. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton on Saturday, May 11 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Dry Pond Cemetery Stoughton.
