Arnold F. "Red" Holmes of Stoughton passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the Baypointe Skilled Nursing Center in Brockton. He was 98 years old and the beloved husband of the late Muriel M. (Curtis) Holmes. Born on December 22, 1916 in Stoughton, he was a son of the late Ernest G. and Helena (Brooks) Holmes. He is survived by his five children, Gayle M. Verdugo and her husband Paul of California, A. Bradford and his wife Mary Ann of Plymouth, Wayne C. and his wife Sophia of Stoughton, Frederick E. of Florida and David B. and his wife Carolyn of Stoughton. He also leaves ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Red had three sisters and five brothers that are deceased.
He left Stoughton High School in his junior year to help support his parents family during the Depression and during World War II was a member of the Massachusetts State Guard. Red worked for several companies including J.W. Wood, the Goddard Hospital and Ocean Spray Cranberries, from which he retired in 1987. In the 1950's thru the early 1960's he was a member and Chief of the Stoughton Auxiliary Fire Department under then Chief Fred Pye.
Visiting Hours will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, January 22 from 4-7 PM. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Red's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
