Anthony T. Novello, 91, the Retired Chief of the Stoughton Fire Department, died Wednesday, February 25, at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing Home. He was the husband of 63 years of Jeanne A. (Frazier) Novello. Born in East Boston, he was raised and educated in Everett and was a graduate of Everett High School Class of 1943. While at Everett High School, he played football, baseball and ran track. He also played for the Greater Boston Football League. He was a Proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in Iwo Jima, Guam, Tinian and Saipan. Upon returning from the Marine Corps, he took a job with New England Greyhound where he worked for over 18 years. Mr. Novello then was appointed as a Firefighter to the Stoughton Fire Department, a career that he enjoyed for over 30 years. He retired in 1989 as the Fire Chief. He was a resident of Stoughton for over 60 years. He was a member of the Stoughton Firefighters Local 718, the VFW Post 1645, Amvets Post 1977, the Knights of Columbus Council 200 and the Sons of Italy all in Stoughton. He was active in Stoughton Sports for many years as a coach and umpire for the Babe Ruth, Little League and Pony Leagues. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, volunteering and spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Anthony T. Novello, Jr. and his wife Lori Gravley of OH, Maria J. Zona and her husband Thomas J. Zona and Martin J. Novello all of RI. He was the beloved grandfather of Marshall Gravley-Novello, Connor Gravley-Novello, Angelina Zona and Joseph Protulis. Tony was the brother of Dorothy Peters of Everett and the late Rita DeStefano, Elvira Golini, Eleanor Sinatra, Rose Healy, Camille Schera, Alfred Novello and George Novello. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Monday, February 29, at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Sunday, February 28, from 2-5 PM. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations in lieu of flowers in Tony's memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
