Anthony W. “Tony” Gareri, Jr., 84, died Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stoughton, after a long battle with declining health. Born in Boston, son of the late Anthony and Connie (Campo) Gareri, he was raised in Roxbury and moved to Stoughton as a young man and attended Stoughton Schools, graduating from Stoughton High School in 1959 where he was a member of the football team for 4 years. It was in high school that he began dating Millie Howard, a relationship that lasted for over 66 years. They married in 1961, made their home in Stoughton and together, raised four beloved sons.
Tony worked as the Maintenance Director for St. John the Evangelist School and Church in Canton for many years and retired several years ago. Previously, he worked as the Grocery Manager at Roxie’s and in the Maintenance Department at American Bilt Rite, both in Stoughton.
Tony was very active in Stoughton civic events, especially Stoughton Little League and Babe Ruth, where he was a longtime umpire and coach. Along with his wife Millie, Tony was an active member of St. James Church in Stoughton, where he was a Eucharistic Minister, CCD Teacher, CYO advisor and Pre Cana volunteer. He volunteered by delivering for Meals on Wheels and enjoyed calling the Bingo games at the Stoughton Council on Aging, St. James Church and Immaculate Conception Church, all in Stoughton. Tony was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Norwood Country Club and at Cedar Hill and also enjoyed working out at the Stoughton YMCA. He enjoyed traveling with Millie and one of their favorite spots was in Ogunquit, Maine looking out at the Marginal Way. Tony was a devoted grandfather and never missed a game or event that his grandchildren participated in. In his free time, he cherished the moments surrounded by his wife, family and his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Millie (Howard) Gareri, Tony is survived by his four sons, Anthony Gareri, III of Halifax, Steven R. Gareri and his wife Tina of Rhode Island, Daniel Gareri of Stoughton and Scott D. Gareri and his wife Lora of Brockton. He was the brother of Robert Gareri of Florida, Cathy Sera of Arizona and the late Pasquale “Pat” Gareri and Joseph Gareri. He is also survived by seven of the most wonderful grandchildren, his best friend and uncle John Campo of Bridgewater, Darlene Gareri of E. Bridgewater and several nieces and nephews.
